For ages, most creatures only learned about magic secondhand — whatever dragons and gods felt like sharing when they were in a generous mood. A spell here, a wonder there. The majority of magic users just work with whatever scraps they were given and repeat the same limited handful of spells their whole lives. A rare few could actually create new ones.
